Abstract

585,767. Chucks and sockets. BATEMAN, W. H. (Motor Tool Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 8, 1944, No. 21992. [Class 83 (iii)] A securing device for milling and like rotary tools comprises a socket member, having a bore open to the face thereof, an annular rib providing an inner annular channel remote from the said face, the rib having a number of ports therethrough to said channel and abutments situated between the rib and the open end, combined with a shank member adapted to enter the bore and provided with locking lugs on its outer portion adapted to pass through the ports and, by rotation, engage the rear of the rib, tapered driving lugs spaced rearwardly from the locking lugs engaging the abutments for transmitting the drive. The holder 10 has a ground face 30 and bore 31 leading to a tapered portion 11 which is provided with projecting lugs 22, Fig. 5, for driving the tool. A neck 17 at the end of the tapered portion is provided with gaps 20, 21, 22, Fig. 4, communicating with an annular recess in the holder. A further smaller bore 12 and recess 13 completes the holder portion. A corresponding shank portion to which the tool 25 is bolted comprises a pilot head 28, a bearing surface 31, and a tapered neck portion of triangular section, the rounded edges of which bear against the correspondingly shaped driving lugs in the holder. The inner end of the tapered triangular portion has three slots 33 cut across the edges which thus form lugs 36-38 adapted to pass through the gaps in the neck 17 and engage the inner face of the neck when the cutter is rotated to engage the driving lugs. The engaging faces of the lugs may be inclined so as to draw the. shank into the holder as.the former is rotated. A further bearing portion 32 adapted to seat in the bore 12 of the holder completes the work portion of the securing device, the whole being secured to the cutter by a nut 29. In a modification the male portion may be provided on the holder and the female portion in the cutter.
