[Class 83 (iv)] In a metallic arc welding-machine, the electrode feed-mechanism, electrode holder and the length of electrode between the supply reel and the welding zone are balanced by resilient members tending to counterbalance the weight or reactions of these elements. The weight of these elements, which may include electrodes of large diameter with heavy coatings, is thus removed from the hands of the operator who holds the electrode holder. A vertically adjustable rod 3 mounted on a roller stand 2 carries a pivot 4 on which is angularly adjustable and secured in position by a screw 6 the casing 7 of the supply reel 8. On a pivot 35 on a rod 3a secured to the rod 3 is mounted a push feed mechanism 11 for the electrode wire 9, the mechanism consisting of a motor 13 and feed rolls 14, 15 with pressure adjusting means 18. Connecting the mechanism 11 with the electrode holder 20 is a flexible shaft 19, which through worm gear and spur gear 24, 28 drives the pulling feed rolls 29, 30. The electrode holder is provided with handles 21, 22 for the operator and a push-button 23 for controlling the motor 13. Between the casing 7 and the motor 13 and a guide tube 38 projecting from the part 11 respectively are springs 34, 33, the spring 33 being adjustable by turning a knob 39. In a modification, the reel casing 8a is provided with bearing parts 45, 46 between which and elements 49, 50 fixed to a rolling stand 43 are mounted springs, 47, 48. The casing has an extension containing the parts 11, 13, and a rigid tube 51 to which is fixed a resilient sleeve 52 of waterproof fabric containing a helical spring electrode guide 53.
