Be it known that I, FRANK P. KoBERT, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Amityville, L. I., in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of Metal- Working, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to metal working machines and particularly to what are known as forging, heading, upsetting, riveting and welding machines, and the invention involves an improvement in machines of this class particularly designed for making certain articles of manufacture, and an improved method o-f operating such machines to form such articles; one object of the invention being to provide an apparatus of the class specified whereby a predetermined article such for illustration as a puppet valve may be quickly and easily formed by a plurality of successive operations without changing or altering in any way the machine or apparatus, or the parts thereof; the invention also comprising an attachment which may be applied to well known forms of electric riveting machines or apparatus, such for instance as that shown and 'described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,139,300, granted to me May 11, 1915, and which covers an electric riveting apparatus involving many of the features of construction shown and described herein. g
The invention described and claimed herein is also an improvement on that described and claimed in a prior application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me May 9, 1916, Serial N 0. 96,314, and covering an electric riveting machine, and whereby said electric riveting machine is converted into a forging machine for the production of articles of manufacture.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side View of a power press or apparatus provided with my improvement;

In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at al the frame of a power press which may be ofthe usual or any preferred form and construction, but which is preferably of the form and construction shown in the application hereinbefore referred to.
Mounted in front of' the bottom portion of the main frame is a work supporting table 6 having a bottom openwork portion 6 and said table is vertically movable. The table I) may be connected with the side portions of the main frame in the usual or any desired manner, preferably by a tongue and. groove construction, and set screws 6 are employed to hold said table at any desired point of adjustment.
The table 6 is made vertically adjustable by means of a vertically arranged shaft 0 which has a bearing in the bottom body portion of said table, and in the base a of the mainframe, and the upper end portion of said shaft is provided with abeveled gear 0 and mounted at right angles to said shaft is a supplemental shaft 0 provided with a pinion c which meshes with the gear 0 and at its outer end with a hand wheel of. Mounted in the main frame rearwardly of the plunger f is an electrode carrier and plunger guide 9 horizontally rotatable on a vertical shaft 9 and the part 9 is provided with a forwardly extending and vertically arranged head 9 in which the plunger is mounted and vertically movable, and mounted in one side portion of the head is a vertlcally movable electrode support h, which is cylindrical in form and provided at its lower end with an enlarged head h' with which is connected an electrode 2', the

The top of the electrode carrier and plunger guide 9 is provided with a backwardly directed extension 9 to the bottom of which is secured a transverse block or plate j, and beneath the rear end portion of the part 9 is a transverse shaft 7? provided at one end with a backwardly directed arm 76 with which is connected a rod which is connected at 70 with a treadle if, in the bot tom of the frame, and mounted on the shaft in is a clamp block 70 of the usual form, and which operates in connection with the block or plate j, and mounted in one side of the main frame is a stop'screiv 70 which operates in connection with the part of the electrode carrier and plunger guide 9 to limit the horizontal rotary movement of said part 9 in one direction.

The plunger 7 is connected with the head {I by a tongue and groove construction, comprising grooves formed in said head and corresponding tongues on the sides of the plunger, as shown at and plates f secured to the head and mounted in the top of the plunger f are guide pins having heads f movable in the transverse space or chamber 6 in the bottom of the plunger fan - wardly through the bottom carriage, and said pins pass downwardly through the top of the plunger f and are provided with transverse locking keys f", d by means of this construction the plunger 7' is connected with the plunger carriage and is movable transversely thereof, as will be readily understood. I also employ a cam drum 25 mounted on a stub shaft t secured inthe side of the main frame, and said cam drum is provided with a gear i which mesheswith the pinion s and said cam drum, in the construction shown, is what is called a built-up cam.
A rod u is passed through one side of the frame above the cam drum 2?, and said rod is provided at its inner end with a head if having a transverse slot a through whch is passed a pin a which is secured to the inwardly directed portion of the part g, and the outer? end of said rod is provided with an anti-friction" roller a which operates in connection with a groove in the cam drum 7', the form and arrangement of which is such as to operate the part 7 as hereinafter described. 7
One of the objects of this invention, as hereinbefore set out, is to form a puppet valve or'provide a puppet valve stem with a head, and the valve stem, in the construction and operation herein shown and described,
constitutes the workpiece, and a rod w is shown supported or held by the two-part 'die 39 the construction of said die, or the separate parts thereof, being the same as in the patent referred to, and in Fig. 6 I have shown or indicated the results produced by the separate steps or operation of forming trode 2' in contact with .by the anti-friction the valve head on the rod or workpiece to which forms the valve.
The operation will be similar to that of the patentand application hereinbefore referred to, and will be readily understood by those familiar with the operation of this stem w ofthe complete class of devices, the distinctive difference in shown supporting the rod or workpiece 'w.
The arm 2' is first grasped by a hand. of the operator and the electrode carrier and plunger guide 9 is swung to the right so as to 'bring the electrode 71 in line withthe rod or workpiece 'w, in which operation the rod u moves outwardly, or to the left, and the anti-friction roller u in the end thereofpasses outwardly through a longitudinal groove 25 which communicates with the groove t in the cam drum. The arm' '5 is then moved downwardly to bring the electhe rod or workpiece 'w and held in such position until said workpiece is heated to the desired temperature, after which the electrode carrier and plunger guide is swung back into the position shown in Fig. 2 of named movement of the part 9 being limited roller a striking the part t of the built-up cam on the cam drum t,- as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawmg.
The treadle is now depressed by a. foot of the operator tooperate the clutch mechanism to put the machine in operation, and by reason of the gear construction 8, 8*, s and. 6 one revolution of the crank shaft 03 will depress the plunger carriage e, the plunger 7 and the die block 7 and the rod or workpiece to will assume the form shown at m in Fig. 6. The treadle is held down ormay be again operated to repeat the above operation and by reason of the built-up cam on the cam drum t, the electrode carrier and plunger uide g is automatically moved into positlon by the rotation. of said cam drum thedrawing, said last to bring the plunger 7 and the die block 7" connectedtherewith in'line to perform the second operation, the result of which is 'shown ,at m in-Fig. 6.,
The above operation is again repeated and with. The separate parts of the two-part die 79 will then be operated by means of the foot lever b to permit the detachment of the workpiece 'w and'the insertion of another workpiece therebetween.
In the operation of the apparatus it will be understood that the construction of the groove 6 in the cam drum :5 is such that whenthe die block 7, or the recesses 1", r and 1 therein are brought in line with the workpiece the same is locked or held against movementin such positions.
Vith the construction herein' shown and described, it will be noted that it requires three consecutive rotations of the crank shaft (Z to rotate the cam drum If one comi'plete revolution, and the treadle and clutch operating mechanism of the apparatus which is the same as others of its class may be controlled by holding the same rout of operation for three complete revolutions of the crank shaft, or any means may be employed for rotating said shaft the desired number of revolutions operatedby one de pression of the treadle as will be readily understood.
My invention is not limited tothe eract timing of the cam drum, as hereinvshowvn and described, as in some cases the desired result may be accomplished by a number of operations less, or greater than three, in which event, the 'gearing which operates the cam drum will be correspondingly changed and thearm s sadjustedto suit ,the change in the gears so as to-rotate the canr drum the desired number of revolutions to one revolution of the crank shaft d, and the built-up cam on said cam drum would bechanged to correspond with the chan e in the gears, and the die block 7 in this event would also be changed by increasing or decreasing the number of the recesses 1, r 1* therein.
In other words, my i-nvention is not limited to the number of consecutive operations of the plunger to produce an article of manufacture, as herein shown anddescribed, nor to the production of puppet valves, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the 'scppe of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my in vention or sabrificing its advantages.
It will be understood that the two-part workpiece holder 11 constitutes the bottom electrode, and this electrode together with the upper electrode i may be- Water-cooled as in other apparatus of this class, or as in the patent and application hereinbefore referred to, and in the accompanying drawing I have shown the usual copper conductors or leads ;2 connected with the bottom electrode, and; connected with the top electrode, and this construction and connection may be the same as in the patent and application hereinbefore referred to, or as in other apparatus of this class and, in practice, the conductors or leads 7 and 7 are connected witha transformer in the usual manner, but which is not shown.
It will also be understood that the object of the rods 0 and springs 0 used in connecting the rear end of the rock beam m with the shaft (I is to give said rock beam a cushioned or relief action as in the application hereinbefore referred to, which will accommodate the crank shaft, rock beam and connected parts to changes in the strain there on occasioned by changes in the character of the workpiece or pieces, or in the length, thickness or size thereof, and which will prevent the breaking of, or injury to, said par Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. An apparatus of the class described provided with a main shaft, a vertically movable plunger carriage in operative connection with the main shaft, a plunger suspended from said carriage and movable transversely, thereof, a swingingplunger guide in connection with which said plunger operates, and means connected with said guide and the main shaft for moving said guide into different positions and for holding the same in such positions.
2. An apparatus of the class described provided with a power shaft and a swinging electrode carrier and plunger guide, a cam drum geared in connection with the power shaft, and an operating rod connected with said electrode carrier and plunger guide and in operative connection with said cam drum.
3. An apparatus of the class described provided with a power shaft, a swinging electrode carrier and plunger guide, a gear mounted on the shaft, a movable arm mounted on said power shaft and carrying a gear which meshes with the gear on said power shaft and a pinion, a suitably supported cam drum geared in connection with said pinion, and a rod connected with said swinging electrode carrier and plunger guide and in operative connection with said drum.
4. An apparatus of the class described provided with a vertically adjustable table, a die bed adjustable on said table, a twopart die mounted on said die bed and "adapted to serve as a workpiece holder,
means for adjusting the position of one part of said die, means for moving the other part of said die toward and from its mate, and a plunger die movable toward and from the two-part die and parallel therewith. .0.
5. An apparatus of the class described provided with an adjustable table, an adjustable die bed mounted on said table, a two-part die mounted on said die bed,
means for adjusting one part of said die into different positions, means for moving the other part of saiddie toward and from its mate, said two-part die being adapted to serve as a workpiece holder, a plunger die movable toward and from the two-part die, and an electrode mounted adjacent to the plunger die and movable toward and from the two-part die and adapted to operate in connection with a workpiece supported by said two-part die.
6. An apparatus of the class described provided with an adjustable table, an adjustable die bed mounted on said table, a two-part die mounted on said bed and one part of which is adjustable and the other movable toward and from the adjustable part, said two-part die being adapted to serve as a workpiece holder, a swinging electrode carrier and plunger. guide, a plunger movable through said guide and provided with a die having spaced forming elements, and an electrode supported by said guide and movable toward and from the two-part die.
7. An apparatus of the class described provided with a two-part electrode adapted to serve as a workpiece holder, a swinging electrode carrier and plunger guide, a plunger movable through said carrier toward and from the workpiece holder and provided with a die the face of which is provided with spaced forming elements, said plunger being movable toward and from the workpiece holder and parallel therewith, an electrode movable through said guide toward and from the work iece holder, and means for operating said p unger to produce y successive movement from a workpiece mounted in said holder a complete article.
8. An apparatus of the class described provided with aswinging electrode carrier and plunger guide, a cam drum in operative connection with the main shaft of the apparatus, and an operating rod connected with said guide and in operative connection with said drum.
9. An apparatus of the class described provided with a workpiece holder, a swinging plunger die guide, a plunger die mounted in said guide and movable toward and from said work piece holder, said die having a plurality of spaced forming elements and means for bringing said elements successively in line with a workpiece supported by said workpiece holder. I

An apparatus of the class descrlbed provided with a workpiece holder, a transversely and vertically movable plunger dle mounted over said workpiece holder and provided in the bottom thereof with spaced recesses, means for heating a workpiece mounted in said holder by passing an electric current therethrough, means for moving provided with said plunger die to bring said recesses successively into line with said workpiece, and means for successively moving said die toward and from the workpiece in said holder to form the desired article.
11. An apparatus of the class described provided with a workpiece holder, a plunger die movable toward and from said workpiece holder and parallel therewith and provided in its face with spaced recesses, means for heating a workpiece mounted in said holder by passing an electric current therethrough, means for moving said plunger die toward and from said workpiece holder, and means for moving said plunger die parallel with said holder into different positions and for holding the same in such positions.
12. An apparatus of the class described provided with a workpiece holder, means for heating a workpiece mounted in said holder by passing an electric current therethrough, a plunger die movable toward and from said workpiece holder and also mov able parallel with said workpiece holder and adapted to be held in different positions in such parallel movement, and means for op erating the plunger die when held in said different positions.

An apparatus of the class described provided with a workpiece holder, a plunger die movable toward and from said workpiece holder and also movable parallel with said .workpiece holder and adapted to be held in different positions in such parallel movement, means for operating the plunger die when held in said different positions, and an electrode movable toward and from said holder and adapted to heat a' workpiece supported therein.
14:. An appapatus of the class described a workpiece holder, means for heating a workpiece mounted in said holder by passing an electric current there- 'through, a plunger movable toward and from the workpiece holder and parallel therewith and provided with a die having spaced forming elements, means connected with the power shaft of the apparatus for moving said plunger toward and from the workpiece holder, and means connected with said shaft for moving said plunger parallel with the workpiece holder intodifferent positions whereby successive movements of said plunger to bring said forming elements into operation with said workpiece will form therefrom a complete article.
