Abstract

584,942. Wave guides. FERTEL, G. E. F., and WRIGHT, C. S. June 7, 1944, No. 10956. [Class 39 (i)] In a wave guide 2, attenuation of highfrequency electromagnetic energy is effected by the ionisation of gas in a gas-discharge tube 1, in which each electrode 3 and the leads 4 supplying current thereto lie in a plane parallel to the H plane of the guide. The amount of attenuation can be varied by varying the current passing through the discharge tube. To reduce persistence of attenuation after the current supplying the discharge has been interrupted, a tube is chosen which rapidly recovers from ionisation. Either the electrodes are arranged close to the glass envelope, or alternatively by introducing into the envelope insulating obstacles, or molecules, for example water vapour or carbon monoxide, which reduce the lifetime of free electrons.
