Abstract

569,346. Discharge apparatus. MULLER, A. Dec. 9, 1942, No. 17536. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Groups III and XI] Chemical compounds, e.g. tungsten oxide, comprising volatile constituents, particularly those 'which normally exist as gases, are decomposed by the heat produced by bombarding the compound by an electronic stream produced by a voltage of about 10,000 in a high vacuum, in the absence of extraneous bodies capable of combining with the volatile constituents. Tungsten oxide may be arranged between two plates of tungsten, or in a vessel of tungsten, the whole forming an anode which is connected to a high tension supply. Oxides of beryllium, iron and copper may be similarly treated. The gaseous constituents may be evacuated. A cathode filament 1 is associated with a focusing shield 2 carried by a sleeve 3 connected to a low voltage source, the other terminal of which is connected through a resistance to a terminal 8, to which the high tension supply is also connected. An insulating sleeve 12 is supported by a water-jacketed chamber 18 having an extension 19 resting on the upper wall of a chamber 21. A focusing coil 22 surrounds the extension 19, and the material to be treated forms the anode 25. An observation opening may be provided.
