Abstract

[Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] An extensible column for use as a lifting jack comprises two members screwed together, one member being supported in a casing adapted to engage against a floor, wall or other fixed surface, the column being extended or retracted by rotating this member in either direction by means of a pneumatic motor mounted on the casing. In the form shown, the hollow lower end of a column 5 engages a square-threaded jack screw 7 the unthreaded lower end of which is supported on a ball race 8 in a casing 9 and is surrounded by a tubular ratchet wheel 13. The latter carries internal teeth engaged by a reversible pawl 14 carried by the screw. 7, and external teeth engaged by a rack in the piston 15 of a double-acting pneumatic motor 16. The pawl 14 has two flat faces and a projection 29 engageable in a groove in the screw 7 and co-operating with a spring-pressed thimble 30 in the screw. The pawl is held in position in a recess in the scraw by a disc 33, and is carried at the lower end of a spill 34 the upper end of which carries a pin 25 engageable by a reversing ring 26. The reversible pawl may be replaced by a pair of oppositelyacting pawls, and the screw might be driven through a worm and worm wheel by a reversible rotary pneumatic motor.
