Abstract

A method of varnishing a rotatable article such as an armature comprises heating it to a temperature sufficient to cause evaporation of the varnish solvent from a coating of varnish applied thereto rotating the heated article in a bath of the varnish and thereby applying thereto a coating of varnish substantially free from solvent, removing the article from the bath and continuing to rotate the thus coated article while heating it to bake the varnish. Preferably the article is rotated while it is being heated and preferably the heating is effected by infra-red radiation. The sequence of steps may be repeated. In an example, an armature is heated to 300 DEG F. for 15 minutes, rotated once at speed of 1 r.p.m. in a varnish consisting of phenol-formaldehyde resin in petroleum naphtha, removed, rotated slowly for 2 minutes and then for 6 minutes while baking. The first two steps are repeated, and the armature removed and baked for 12 minutes.
