Abstract

276,864. Greene, H. E. B., and Greene, J. H. Nov. 8, 1926. Ornamenting.-Articles are given a decorative finish by immersing them in a paint comprising a volatile solvent' and a ground pigment, withdrawing them slowly, and periodically reversing them end to end until the coating is set without; the formation of folds, &c. Suitable paints are those having a cellulose ester base and containing a volatile solvent such as an alcoholic, amyl acetate, acetone or ethylene glycol monoethylether solvent, and the articles may be primarily coated with a filler before treatment. Two or three coatings may be applied and the article finally dipped into a varnish, withdrawn slowly, reversed, and dried in a drying chamber at about 60‹ C. To obtain marbled effects, the article is coated as before, then dipped into paint of another colour, then reversed and rotated, and finally dried. Alternatively, instead of dipping, a paint or paints of other colours can be splashed on to the coated surface, reversal and rotation being effected as before. Powdered metals may be dropped on to the article previous to the setting of the paint, and paints containing metallic powders as pigments may be used.
