Abstract

582,997. Vehicle axles. PICKERING & CO., Ltd., R. Y., and GLOVER, T. S. June 28, 1944, Nos. 12257/44. and 15241/45. [Class 103 (vi)] [Also in Group XXII] An axle for a railway or tramway vehicle comprises solid end pieces to carry the wheels and a tubular middle portion to which the end pieces are united by welding, the axes of the end pieces and the middle portion forming one straight line. As shown in Fig. 1 the axle comprises a tubular portion 15 and solid end pieces 10 which are cupped at 14 and flash welded to the tube 15 at 16. Fig. 2 shows a solid end 10a spigoted at 17 into a reduced end 15b of the tube, the two parts being flash-welded at 19 above the undercut part 18.
