Abstract

582,182. Two-stage pumps. WORLIDGE, R. F., and INTEGRAL, Ltd. June 3, 1943, No. 8943. [Class 102 (i)] In a pump in which one or more pistons 21 of a second-stage unit are moved in radial cylinders 20 on their working strokes by a cam or eccentric 22 with which they are held in contact by pressure-fluid supplied by a first-stage gear unit 11, 12, the two units being driven by a common shaft 5, the output of the pump is automatically and progressively regulated by controlling the first-stage pressure in accordance with variations in the output pressure, zero output being obtained when the first-stage pressure is reduced below a predetermined minimum. One side of the gears 11, 12 is supplied with oil by an inlet 14, the other side communicating through a port with an annulus 18 on the opposite side of a partition 8 separating the two units. Ports leading to the annulus 18 and to a delivery annulus 28 are controlled by spring-pressed double inlet and outlet non-return valves 24, 25 for the cylinders 20. Passages 31 connect the delivery annulus 28 with the end of the stem of an interstage poppet valve 17, which is controlled by weak and strong springs 33, 34. The annulus 18 also communicates through a port 35 with a chamber below the valve 17, a chamber above this valve communicating by passages 37, 36 with the inlet 14 or with a drain connection. An increase of the delivery power pressure acting on the valve therefore reduces the required pressure from the first-stage acting on the annular surface of the valve surrounding the stem. This reduces the working strokes of the pistons, and the delivery is correspondingly reduced. When the delivery pressure rises sufficiently to hold the valve 17 wide open without assistance from the interchange pressure, the output is reduced to zero. Maximum opening of the valve 17 is controlled by escape ports 46 connected to suction. The first stage unit may have-twice the capacity of the secondstage unit.
