Abstract

1,026,211. Feeding webs. TICKOPRES Ltd. May 31, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 21071/62. Heading B6B. In a ticket-printing machine having a continuously-rotating printing cylinder 10 and impression roller 12, the strip 17 is stopped when a photo-electric device detects a mark on the strip and started by a switch 52 actuated by a cam 50 rotating with cylinder 10, the actuation occurring just before the type 14 reaches the strip. The marks may be lines of transverse perforations 17a defining ticket lengths, an edge notch in each ticket length or a printed mark on each ticket length. As shown in Fig. 1, the strip is advanced by the nip between continuously rotating roller 20 and friction roller 21 carried on bell-cranks 22 spring-urged to close the nip by springs 33. Switch 52 is normally closed and is in series with a solenoid 31 which when energized pulls the bell-cranks against springs 33 to open the feed-roller nip and stop the feed. Assuming the strip is moving and being printed, when a line of perforations 17a comes between lamp 44 and photo-electric element 47, a signal will be generated to energize solenoid 31 through switch 52 and stop the feed. Just before the type 14 next reaches the strip, switch 52 is momentarily broken to de-energize the solenoid and restore the feed. Modified control circuits are described. As shown in Fig. 6, the strip is advanced by the nips between two sets of rollers 65, 68 fixed to shafts 67, 70 which are caused to rotate in unison by gears 73, 74, the sets being urged together by springs 72. A continuously-rotating gear 77 meshes with a gear 76 rigid with a sleeve 75 connected to shaft 67 by an electromagnetic clutch 79. The other end of the shaft 67 has an electromagnetic brake 82. The clutch and the brake are energized alternately, the photo-electric detector energizing the latter when it senses the perforations and the cylinder switch energizing the former to initiate feed. This arrangement prevents over-run of the strip.
