Abstract

578,991. Incendiary bullets. CHISMAN, L. DE V., and DIXON, C. A. Sept. 15, 1941, No. 11785. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] An incendiary bullet' of rifle calibre comprises a thick steel sleeve 2 closed at its rear by a plug 8 and containing the incendiary material 7 the steel sleeve extending along the greater part of the length of a thin outer envelope 1 having a tapered nose beyond the sleeve, a thin packing sleeve 3 of soft metal being arranged between the envelope and the steel sleeve. The incendiary material is ignited without the use of auxiliary material either by distortion of the nose on impact or as shown by an anvil 5 engaging an embedded steel ball 6. The incendiary filling consists of a powder of oxygen-free readily oxidisable metal such as magnesium-aluminium alloy and a non-hygroscopic compound such as barium nitrate containing oxygen for combustion of the powder. The outer envelope 1 is preferably of a copper zinc alloy such as gilding metal, the soft sleeve 3 being composed of a lead-antimony alloy.
