Abstract

578,379. Drying timber. TWYBLE, J. A. Nov. 26, 1943, No. 19824. [Class 34 (ii)] Timber is dried by stacking it in a closed chamber 7 and then subjecting it to treatment by steam at a temperature of 145‹F. for a period of 8 hours, followed by air treatment for about 40 hours with the chamber maintained at a temperature of from 120‹ to 130‹F. Preferably the steam is generated by permitting water containing hygroscopic and pore-filling substance, such as hydrated lime and bicarbonate of soda respectively, in a storage tank 26 on the roof 1 of the chamber 7 to drip through a perforated discharge pipe 29 on to a heated metal &c. plate 12 which extends centrally along the floor of the chamber and forms the roof of a firebox 13, the latter being fed with fuel through sloped passages 31 and locating a perforated combustion-air pipe 25. An inlet pipe 21 for drying air leading into the end of the chamber 7 is also provided, together with air release valves 30 on the chamber roof, the said valves being both automatic and manually operable.
