578,096. Universal joints. COLEMAN, S. L. C. Aug. 4, 1944, No. 12596/43. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A shaft 12 drives a wheel shaft 1 through an intermediate shaft 5 and two universal joints each embodying a four-armed trunnion cross. The joint between the shafts 1, 5, is of ordinary construction in which forked yokes 2, 4, on the shafts 1, 5, engage pairs of journals 3, 3<1>, on the cross. The other joint comprises a forked yoke 6 on the shaft 5 engaging one pair of journals i, the other pair of journals 8, 8<1>, engaging slots 9<2>, 9<3>, in yokes 9. 9<1>, on the shaft 12. Cylindrical cases 11, 11<1>, mounted on the trunnions 8, 8<1>, by needle roller bearings 10, 10<1>, act as rollers. The trunnions 8, 8<1>, are kept perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 12 by a fork 14 having bearings 15, 15<1>, embracing the trunnions and a shaft 17 engaging a bore 18 in the shaft 12. The latter is driven from a differential mechanism and is located axially in the differential casing 25 by a ball bearing 23. The yokes 9, 9<1>, are enclosed by a cup 19 welded thereto, and a dirt-excluding bellows 20 is secured by clips 21, 22, to the cup 19 and shaft 5. The bore 18 is connected to the inside of the casing 25 by a small duct so that reciprocatory motion of the shaft 17 draws lubricant from the casing into the bore.
