576,769. Welding aluminium window frames &c. WROUGHT LIGHT ALLOYS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, and WEST, E. G. June 10, 1944, No. 11136. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In welding aluminium or its alloys, the parts are placed in guides, the oxidized surfaces to be welded are cut and oxide thus removed by a cutting tool and immediately resistance buttwelded without removal from the guides and before the surfaces again oxidize. In resistance .welding mitred joints in casement window frames &c., the sections 1 are secured in clamps 3 with electrode heads 2 with their rear ends against adjustable stops 5 carried by guide members 4 parallel to the sections. A milling cutter 7 or broach mounted on a slide is then traversed to cut away the metal from each mitred surface, whereupon after disengaging the tool, the electrodes are advanced to weld the surfaces together. If desired, the sections may be slidable within the clamps to effect the weld, the electrodes being disposed in a stationary position near to the surfaces to be welded. The apparatus may include mechanism for adjusting the angle of the parts and may also be used to effect ordinary butt joints.
