Abstract

573,435. Cartridge magazines. VESELY, J. Aug. 14, 1942, No. 11409. [Class 119] A firearm fitted with a magazine having two or more compartments, such as 7, 8, arranged one. behind the other, is provided with means for retaining the upper cartridge 27 in compartment 8 until compartment 7. is exhausted, and with means for actuating the retaining means so that it acts on each cartridge in compartment 8 in succession while the previous cartridge is being fed towards the breech chamber. In the form shown, the cartridge 27 is retained by a finger 25 projecting from a tubular boss which is mounted on a spindle 21. This spindle and a further spindle 20 are mounted in a chamber 19 of the firearm, the spindle 20 carrying a spring-controlled tubular boss 34 tending, under the action of the spring 37, to rotate in an anti-clockwise direction in Fig. 4. The boss 34 carries a detent 32, the under face of which is so shaped that when it is made to bear, under the action of spring 37, on a similar face at the end of a lever 29 integral with the finger 25, it forces the finger to move into the cartridge-retaining position shown. The finger when so forced is positively held by the engagement of the end face of detent 32 with the curved face 31 of lever 29. In operation, a projection 41 extending from the feeder plate of the front compartment through a slot 42 in the magazine wall rotates the boss 34 against the action of its spring when the front compartment is exhausted of cartridges, thus freeing the finger 25 and enabling the cartridge 27 to be moved into the path of the breechblock. As each cartridge is fed from compartment 8 towards the breech chamber, it depresses the feeder plate of compartment 7. This action depresses the projection 41, thus enabling the devices in the chamber 19 to move, under the action of spring 37, to the cartridge-retaining position shown in Fig. 4. Specifications 573,429, 573,434 and 573,458 are referred to.
