[Class 64 (i)] A domestic or central-heating boiler comprises a bottom 2, side and back walls 4 and an upwardly and rearwardly-inclined top 3 surrounding a combustion chamber 1, the side and back walls and the top being formed as water spaces communicating one with another ; the bottom may also be hollow to constitute a water-space or, alternatively, covered with firebrick 2a. Solid fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber from a hopper 13 which is mounted on the boiler top and has a discharge 15, fitted with a shut-off member 36, adapted to register with an opening 16 in said boiler top, the opening being continued in the form of an adjustable pipe 17, 17a which terminates above a domed water-cooled fuel-supporting member 19 located on the bottom of the boiler above an apertured plate 20. This plate 20 has a pipe extension 28 to which combustion air is supplied to the boiler either from a thermostatically-controlled fan or blower 29 or from an opening 33, the latter being closed by a light flap valve 31 when the fan is in operation but opening under the action of the natural draught through the boiler when the fan is at rest, the air passing to the combustion chamber through slots 21 in the fuel-supporting member 19 and also through an air pipe 24 which extends from the latter and terminates in a horseshoe-shaped apertured pipe 25. In order to provide, if desired, a supply of gaseous fuel to the boiler, the air supply pipe 28 is fitted with a gas supply pipe 34, which pipe may also be used for supplying water or steam to the combustion chamber 1 when coke is being burnt. The combustion gases leave the chamber 1 through an aperture 7 and pass downwardly through a central vertical flue 39 and then upwardly through side flues to an outlet 43 leading to a chimney, the said flues 39 contacting the rear face of the rear boiler wall, and one of the side flues may be provided with an opening 45, normally closed by a cover-plate, over which a cooking oven may be secured.
