Abstract

[Also in Group XIII] In a hot-water or steam boiler having a hopper 2 which feeds a fire bed through which a fan 38 forces combustion air, a flue 27 extends upwardly from the fire bed and contains a water chamber 32 which divides the flue into front and rear passages 33, 34 through which the flue gases flow in equal proportions. The flue 27 and the passages 33, 34 taper upwardly, and lead to a rear flue 30 and outlet flue 31. The water spaces of the boiler are formed by hollow side walls, hollow walls 3, 25, 28, a hollow platform 5 at the bottom of the hopper, and a front space 21. The side walls contain baffles 56, 59, and the platform 5 and chamber 32 contain pairs of baffles 58, 60 which are spaced at the centre. The boiler has a safety valve 64 which if it blows off, discharges water into the firebox to put the fire out. The fan outlet has a pivoted flap 45 with adjustable stops for limiting its opening and closing. Secondary air flows through an opening 40, past an adjustable valve 42, to a downwardly directed outlet 44. A removable cover 37 allows the flues to be cleaned. A duct 50, normally closed by a flap 51, discharges accumulated dust from the flue 31. The firebars 12 are supported by a cross-bar 13 and a spring- supported bar 14. Clinker is pushed from the firebars into an ash-pan 18 by ram 16 reciprocable over the bars by an oscillating crank 17. A slidably adjustable plate 10 regulates the flow of fuel from the hopper 2.
