570,029. Straightening. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J., and POPE, A. Jan. 4, 1944, No. 100. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for straightening tubes, rods or sections of the kind having one or more sets of straightening rolls each set of which comprises two groups of rolls staggered with respect to each other, one group is adjustable relatively to the other group in a. direction parallel to the pass and at right angles to the roll axes so as to move the periphery of each roll of one group nearer to or further from the periphery of a roll of the other group to suit the size of the work without changing the pitch of the rolls. One set of rolls comprises a frame 28 in which are mounted a pair of grooved preliminary rolls 6 and two groups 11, 17 of three or more grooved straightening rolls driven through universal joints 10 by bevel and spur gear from the main shaft 7. The rolls 11 are carried in a slide 13 adjustable by a screw 15 along guides 14 so that the spacing between each roll 11 and its adjacent roll 17 may be varied without changing the pitch of the rolls 11. The rolls 17 are carried by separate slides 18 transversely adjustable by screws 19. The rolls 17 may also be axially adjustable by hand-operated spindles 25 rotating gears 24, 23 for operating screws 22 screwed into the slides 18. The spindles are locked by ratchets 26 and pawls 27. The frame 28 may be transversely adjustable bodily by screws 30 through gearing 31, 32 operated by a knob 34, the screw 15 passing through an elongated slot in one of the guide brackets 29. The second set of rolls which are provided with similar adjustments are mounted with their axes at right angles to those of the first set.
