Abstract

569,584. Work-holders. HARRIS, C. S., and GOLD, B. Feb. 17, 1944, No. 2977. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A rotary lathe &c. spindle adapted to carry a vacuum- or pressure-operated chuck or workholder has a cylindrical portion mounted in a stationary boxed sleeve, the diameter of the bore being slightly greater than that of the cylinder, and the sleeve and spindle having registering passages connecting a vacuum or fluid pressure supply line with the chuck or work-holder. The spindle 2, shown fitted with a vacuum work-holder 5, is mounted in bearings 3, 4 and is surrounded by a fixed sleeve 7 the bore of which provides a clearance of not more than 0.00025 inches. The spindle has central and transverse air passages 8, 9 leading to a passage 10 in the sleeve. The vacuum chuck may be replaced by a fluid pressure chuck having work-engaging members.
