Abstract

568,202. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CROFT, E. H. Jan. 31. 1941, No. 1297. [Class 38 (iii)] In the control of electric motors in which regenerative braking is eftected by backwards movement of the controller from a high-speed position, means in dependence on the motor speed (e.g. a centrifugal governor, or a relay and tachometer generator) are employed to effect a reduced excitation of the motor and prevent regeneration if after the controller has been moved to the " off " position it is again moved forward while the motor has sufficient speed to regenerate. The invention is applicable to compound motors and their equivalents, especially traction motors where the driver of a vehicle has to switch off for a gap in the conductor or rails. As shown, the shunt excitation is controlled by main and resistance-shorting contactors with coils 15a, 16a, 17a which are controlled by a relay 24, 25 with contacts 25 closed when the coil 24 is energized. At the first notch, the coil is energized and contacts 25 and auxiliary contacts 27 close. As the speed is notched up, the regenerative speed is reached, the centrifugal switch opens its contacts 28, but without effect, as they are shortcircuited by contacts 27. When, however, the controller is brought to zero positions and again moved forwards while speed. is such that regeneration could occur, the motor accelerates as a series motor, but as the contacts 27 open at the zero position and remain open and the contacts 28 are held open, the shunt field is not connected and the motor does not regenerate. The contacts 28 may be shunted. by a pushbutton switch to permit regeneration at any time. Specification 534,766 is referred to.
