Abstract
567,246. Valves. TOWLER, J. M., and TOWLER, F. H. June 2, 1943, No. 8801. [Class 135] A pressure-actuated hydraulic piston-type admission or exhaust valve has the valve member moved in one direction against spring or other predetermined pressure by hydraulic pressure acting against different piston areas, the pressure on the smaller area serving to effect initial movement of the valve plunger and the pressure on the greater piston area serving to hold the valve plunger at the end of its travel and, if desired, to complete such movement, the admission and release of the pressure acting on the greater area being automatically controlled by valve means. As shown in the Figure, the valve 1 loaded by a spring 3 controls the connection between an inlet chamber 4 and an outlet 7 via ports 8 and a reduced part 9. A small plunger 2 bearing against the bottom of the valve plunger works in a ported liner which has. a reduced upper part to provide an annular passage 12 connecting ports 17, 18 with the chamber below the valve and with a reduced lower part to provide an annular passage connecting passages 19 with a passage 22 leading to the outlet 7. Inlet pressure passes through a passage 11 to a chamber 10 where it acts on the lower end of the plunger. When the inlet pressure acting on the small plunger is sufficient to overcome the load of the spring, it first lifts the valve 1 and finally permits inlet pressure to pass through a longitudinal passage 13 and transverse passage 15 and thence by passages 17, 12 to the underside of the plunger 1. When the pressure has fallen sufficiently low to allow the spring to move the valve to its nearly closed position, a groove 20 connects passages 18, 19 to release the pressure below the plunger 1. In a modification, pressure is admitted through a helical passage and groove on the small plunger and is released to the passage 11 through a spring-loaded non-return valve.
