Abstract

565,596. Winches. HYLAND, C. Jan. 26, 1943, No. 1280. [Class 78 (v)] A winch &c. drum is driven optionally in either direction by one of two friction wheels 1 which are mounted in a housing 7 swingable about a motor axis 4. The drive from the motor shaft is through chain and sprockets 3 to one wheel 1 and through pinion gearing 2 to the other wheel, so that these wheels 1 rotate in opposite senses. The housing is moved by a mechanically or hydraulically operated rod 9, and when in mid-position, with neither wheel 1 in engagement, a brake may be automatically applied to the drum. The drive from the wheels 1 preferably takes place through a friction wheel 8 geared at 11 to the drum 10.
