Abstract

563,841. Retractive switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 14, 1943, No. 7697. Convention date, May 20, 1942. [Class 38 (v)] Particularly for starting electric discharge lamps a rotary switch is moved from a stable " off " position through another stable position closing one circuit, to a position against the action of a spring, in which more circuits are closed all through the action of cams on a central rotatable member 12 and spaced pairs of contacts 20, 35, 40 around it. On release of the handle the operating member returns to the second-mentioned stable position, which is shown in the Figure. Thus in the extended position, with all circuits closed, the filaments of, say, two discharge lamps are in series and the main switch is on. After a few seconds the switch is released, the series connection is broken, a glow discharge starts across the filaments and the main switch 20 remains on until manually opened.
