Abstract

596,126. Solar compasses. POTTER, C. .July 19, 1945, No. 18574. [Class 97 (ii)] To adapt a sun compass of the kind described in Specification 557,901 for use in either hemisphere, a two-armed shadow pointer 19 is provided in place of a one-armed pointer, the time graduations reading reversely when the compass is used in the two hemispheres. In order to use the compass to maintain a set direction of travel at night, a socket 37 is provided in the index pointer 9 to accommodate the gnomon 20, normally carried by the shadow pointer 19, in a second position for observational use in conjunction with a second gnomon accommodated in socket 36 in dial plate 1 at position south or 180 degrees. The index pointer 9 is adjustably clamped to an arm 6 carried by the gimbal mountings of the compass and the dial plate 1 is clamped against the turned-over portion of arm 6 by screw means from underneath the plate 1. The pivot of the shadow pointer 19 is clamped in position against plate 1 by clamping bolt 17 accessible from above the plate.
