Abstract

561,250. Lubricating worm gearing. BOOTH, A., and WALLWORK GEARS, Ltd. Nov. 12, 1942, No. 15989. [Class 80 (i)] A worm 1 engaging a worm wheel 2 has an axial bore 3 from which lead a number of radial passages 4, 5 terminating at the bottom of the tooth spaces and on opposite sides thereof so as to deliver lubricant from the bore. 3 to both faces of the teeth. A number of passages deliver to each tooth space as shown in Fig. 2. Instead of or, in addition to the orifices terminating at the roots of the teeth, they may terminate in the faces of the teeth as at 6, 7. The lubricant'is. supplied by a pump 8 located in a sump of the casing 9 containing lubricant to the level 14. The pump is driven from the worm by sprockets 10, 11 and chain 13. The delivery pipe 15 terminates in a nozzle 16 in line with the bore 3, a packing gland being provided at 18. According to the Provisional Specification, the lubricant may be fed by gravity and, where a pump is used, the rotary impeller has pockets into which the fuel flows by gravity.
