[Class 20 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A union for connecting the lowermost member of a mast and a derrick for raising the mast, comprises means so arranged between the mast, the derrick, and a common base plate, that the mast and the derrick rotate about the same axis while the mast is being raised. The plate 17 for receiving the lower end of the mast 6 is provided with depending .cheeks 10 rotatably attached to a block adapted to be rotatably mounted between cheeks 20 set at right angles to the previous pair and upstanding from the base plate 21. The block is secured to the cheeks 20 by pins 19 which also carry further cheeks 20A disposed at right angles to both the former pairs and adapted to carry a pin 22 on which is pivotally mounted cheeks attached to a plate 17A to which a derrick is attached. The arrangement is such that the derrick is upright while the mast is horizontal, so that by rotating the derrick to a horizontal position, the mast is raised to a vertical position. The ends of the mast and the derrick are each provided with a slotted plate 7 and the plates 17 and 17A are provided with upstanding lipped lugs 12 which can be passed through the slots in the respective slotted plates on the mast and the derrick so that by rotation of slotted plates, the mast and derrick are loosely secured to their respective plates. Locking pins 23 are provided for each slotted plate. In a modification for heavier work sockets 50, 59 are provided for the ends of the mast and derrick respectively, the sockets being connected by a universal joint 54, 55, 56, 57, 58 to a base plate 51.
