Abstract

559,763. Aeroplanes. MOTLEY, L. Oct. 16, 1942, No. 14521. [Class 4] A wheeled vehicle 1 for conveying troops is arranged to be mounted in the fuselage 2 of a carrier aircraft in such a manner that when the destination is reached the car containing the troops may be lowered to enable the aircraft to carry out an ordinary landing until the vehicle touches the ground whereupon it is released from the aircraft which rises leaving the vehicle travelling along the ground. As shown, the gear for lowering the vehicle 1 comprises pairs of toggles 4, 5 and 7, 8 pivoted within the aircraft at 10, 11 and detachably connected to the car at 12, 13. The toggles are normally held in the collapsed position shown in broken lines by a hydraulic jack 14 connected to the toggle members 4, 7 at 15, 16 and when it is desired to lower the vehicle, doors 17 are opened and the jack is permitted to elongate. The aircraft is fitted with a retractable undercarriage for taking off and landing and which may be in two parts mounted in the wings so as not to interfere with the operation of the vehicle. To brake the vehicle when it is released from the aircraft, a parachute normally housed in the tail of the vehicle may be permitted to open. The vehicle may be power driven. A number of vehicles may be stored in the aircraft and be attached successively to the lowering gears. The vehicle may be loaded on to the aeroplane by raising it while beneath the aeroplane, by a hydraulic lift.
