Abstract

1,199,618. Aircraft undercarriages. SUD-AVIATION SOC. NATIONALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONATIQUES. 21 Nov., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 52833/67. Heading B7G. A low-wing aircraft has a retractable steerable forward undercarriage and a main landing gear comprising three units substantially side by side each comprising an independent mechanism carrying a shock-absorber 31, 46 and groundengaging elements (e.g. wheels 4a and 4c) so arranged that each unit has a similar load/ deflection relationship, the main undercarriage being retractable so that when retracted the ground-engaging elements are housed within the fuselage. When lowered the wheels 4a may be slightly behind or in front of the wheels 4c. In an illustrated embodiment the lateral units, carrying wheels 4c, retract sideways inboard, and the central units retract forwards. The lateral units retract pivoting at 40 when hydraulic jacks 51 and 54 extend and retract, respectively (Fig. 10). The central units retract when hydraulic jacks 34 and 39 retract (Fig. 11). The cavities 6, 13 into which the wheels 4a and 4c retract are below the pressurized floor of the aircraft fuselage 1. The cavities 6, 13 are separated by fore-aft beams 14 which carry closure flaps at their lower ends. The support mechanism for the lateral units retracts into cavities in the wings 2, the apertures for these cavities being closed partially by flaps carried by the mechanism and partially by flaps pivoted to the wing outboard of the pivot 40.
