559,460. Moulding-plungers; pistons. HORDERN-RICHMOND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and WARWICK, G. A. July 13, 1942, No. 9722. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A press for moulding or consolidating material having platens or walls between which the movable member of the press operates, has one or more sealing members adapted to move laterally to establish and maintain intimate contact with the platens or walls under the pressure applied to the material by the sealing member or members direct or through an intermediate member. Fig. 1 shows a movable member 2 having a tongue 3 attached by pins 4 to strips 5 of bronze. Clearance between the pins and strips is obtained by tapering the pins or the holes through which they pass. The backs of the strips are chamfered at 8, and under the pressure of the material being moulded the pins rock outwardly. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the strips 21 slide outwardly on the chamfered faces 23, 24 of the movable member and a retaining strip 26 respectively. In a modification of the construction, the chamfer is formed not on the members 23, 24, but on the lower side of the strips 21.
