Packing for a compressor piston comprises rings 4 of plastics material (e.g. split rings of P.T.F.E.) which are received in inclined grooves and urged by fluid pressure into sealing contact with the cylinder wall or rod, the tangential component T1 of the force P1 being greater than the tangential component T of the force P.
