Abstract

559,348. Magnesium; pyrotechnic compositions; thermo-aluminic mixtures. FORD MOTOR, CO., Ltd. Dec. 24, 1942, No. 18350. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] A material for use, either with or without admixture with metal oxides, for incendiary or pyrotechnical purposes, is made by reducing magnesium oxide and quenching the magnesium vapour in oil to form a thin slurry, passing this to a settling tank, using the lighter oil containing some magnesium particles for further quenching operations, and passing the thickened slurry through a filter and drier to obtain a thick heavy mud. The reduction of the magnesium oxide may be effected by heating in an electric furnace with carbon in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Specifications 431,537 and 448,536 are referred to.
