Abstract
558,914. Control of D.C. motors. MORRIS, E. H. May 20, 1942, No. 6886. [Class 38 (iii)] A motor 10 driving a load which may overrun in one direction, e.g. a blade-adjusting device of a variable pitch propeller, has two series fields 11, 12, one for each direction of rotation, controlled by a two-way switch 13, 14, 15, the contact 15 of which may be moved by an engine speed governor. During drive in the overrun direction, e.g. adjusting the propeller to fine pitch, the series winding 11 is energized and contactor 19, 21 converts the winding 12 into an aiding shunt field in series with a resistance 18 which may be an aiding auxiliary field winding of the motor. If the load overruns a braking current circulates in the field 12, and eventually the current in the field 11 drops to zero. whereupon contactor 19 opens, the motor thereupon ceases to develop a back E.M.F. and a brake coil 22 releases a spring-applied brake. The brake release coil 22 may be in series with the field 22.
