Abstract

557,307. Stripping cables. ULTRA ELECTRIC, Ltd., and KNOTT, L. G. W. Aug. 4, 1942, No. 10864. [Class 36] [Also in Group VIII] A thermal cutting-device for stripping cables is constructed with an electrically heated lower cutter a<SP>1</SP> and a co-acting cutter a<SP>2</SP> which is moved towards the. lower one so as to grip the cable and cut through the insulation, the cutter being moved by an electromagnetic action brought about by correct positioning of the cable. The cutters are grooved to receive cables of two different diameters, and to strip different lengths of insulation, the ends of the cables are registered against either of two stepped surfaces O<SP>3</SP>, O<SP>2</SP> of a block O which is moved longitudinally by the insertion of the cable to close a stop switch r, s, t, which when closed causes heating of the cutters and energization of an electromagnet m causing descent of the cutter a<SP>2</SP>. The cutters are connected to secondary coils S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> of a transformer T<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, in the primary P<SP>1</SP> of which is arranged a switch D<SP>1</SP> which is a diagrammatic representation of part of the stop switch r, s, t. The other member of the switch is indicated by E<SP>1</SP> and is arranged in the circuit of the primary P<SP>2</SP> of a transformer T<SP>2</SP> the secondary S<SP>5</SP> of which energizes the electromagnet m. The block O is adjustable to and from the cutters so as to vary the length of insulation to be stripped. The cutters a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> are provided with thick back edges of the same shape as the cutter to maintain uniformity of current density. The duration of the heating current is controlled by a thermostat I the period of which can be varied by resistance J. The circuit can be switched over to handcontrol of the currents. The circuit includes a neon-light M which indicates the completion of the cutting operation. After the insulation is cut through it may be withdrawn by engaging the cut portion between cutting-knives C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> similar in shape to the cutters a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP>, depressing the upper cutter by means of a handle j and pulling on the uncut portion of the cable.
