This invention relates to a device for stripping the insulation from wire by hand manipulation.
In the use of an insulated wire stripping device, it is a difficult matter to by hand so arrange the insulated wire and the hand too-1 which is to operate thereon that the cut of the insulation is performed in the desired manner.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a guide for assisting in positioning the wire in the wire stripping device so that the cut will be made at a predetermined. point and in the plane desired withl reference to the end of the work without requiring the services of a skilled operator.
Another object of this invention is to so guide the insulating wire into the stripping device that the out will be performed at right angles to the length of the wire core.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stop for the insertion of the wireinto the stripping device so that the correct length of insulation desired will be stripped from the wire.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple guide frame which may be positioned on the pivot of the plier-like members and be resiliently heid in position symmetrically with reference to the members. i
Another object of the invention is to resiliently hold the guiding member in a symmetrical position and utilize the resilience to assist in moving the jaws toward closed position to partly balance the opening spring for the jaws on the opposite side of the pivot.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In proceeding with this invention we have mounted upon a plier-like pair of cutting members a frame which serves as a'guide for the work which is inserted into the members and have also located a stop to also assist in positioning the Work in the members that an accurate out may be performed on the work. Y
With reference to the drawing l5 designates one member and I6 designates another member, which members are pivoted together as at Il by means of a hollow pin I8 and rivet I9 headed over as at 2d at either end over the Washers 2l. These members I5 and IE provide handle portions 22 and 23 which are moved apart by means of spring 24 guided on suitable guide pins 25 mounted in each of the handle portions. The opposite end of the member IS is provided with a cutting jaw 26 having a sharpened edge 21 and a notch 28 While the opposite end of the member i5 is provided with a cutting jaw 2s provided with a sharpened edge 3B and a notch 3i. These sharpened edges 2l and 3s are adapted to come together and out Whatever may be between them While the notches 23 and 3l register and are of a size to straddle the wire core of the work so as not to cut it while cutting the insulation.
Jaw 29 carries a generally U-shape stop 32 with an opening 33 between the two leg portions 34, this opening 33 being of a size to permit the wire core to pass through while the leg portion 34 will forni an abutment stop for the insulation which surrounds the wire core. Projections 35 and .'56 on the jaws have sharpened edges which may come together for the purpose of cutting the wire core by a separate and independent operation if desired.
The positioning and guiding means is designated generally 40 and is shown in perspective in Fig. 2 as of generally rectangular box-like shape, having edge walls 4I and an end wall i2 while there are spanning broken away side walls 43 connecting the free ends of the walls il i Thesey walls 43 are provided with openings t4 for the reception of the pivoting means H3 for pivotally mounting this frame on the pivot of the members. In order to centralize and symmetrically position 3 the frame with reference to the jaws we provide flat leaf springs l5 which are riveted in position as at 4S on the edge walls 4! and which extend into engagement with the jaws 25 and 29 as shown in Figs. 1, '7, 8, and 9.
The end wall 42 is provided with an opening di which is beveled as at i8 for the easy positioning of the work da, consisting of a wire core 5t and insulation 5l thereabout, through this opening tl. This frame is so supported that side walls of this opening 41 serves to direct the work toward the pivot of the members. of the frame may be further enclosed by a web portion 52 of the sidewall 43 as illustrated in Fig. 2.
In some cases instead of providing cutting edges integral with the jaws 26 and 2l these cutting edges may be formed separately as shown in Fig. at 53 and bolted to the jaws as at5fl.v
In this manner the cutting edges may be easily and quickly removed and sharpened and re turned to place when desired.
In operation the work 159 isv passed through the opening i? while the jaws 2t and 29 are spread apart, and moved inwardly toward the pivot I1 until the end oi' the wort` engages the stop 32. The handles 22 and 23 are moved toward each other that the cutting edges 27 and 3D may cut through the insulation while leaving the wire core 50 uncut.
The guide so locates the work that the fine wires of the core are not accidentally severed. After the insulation 5i is cut through as shown in Fig. 7 the wire will be withdrawn which will pull the insulation off the wire core as shown in Fig. 8. If it is desired that a longer uncovered or stripped portion of the wire be exposed, the wire will be again inserted so that the core 50 will extend through space 33 of the stop while the insulation will engage the arm 3d as shown in Figs. 9 and 1l. After so positioning the wire the jaws will again be brought together and cut through the insulation as shown in Fig. 9 and this cut insulation pulled off the end of the wire. This operation may be quickly repeated that the desired length of wire core may be exposed for useful purposes.
If it is desired to cut the wire core this may be accomplished by positioning the wire core between the sharpened protuberances 35 and 36 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and again bringing the handles together to cut through the wire core.
Should work of different external diameter be desired to be operated upon, the guide opening, as 4l', may be changed by the use of a bushing 56, as shown in Fig. l0, which will have the desired internal diameter bore dl. This removable and exchangeable bushing is held in place by binding screw 5l. If the core is of diierent size the cutters 53 may be changed to have a different sized notch in each of them and the stop 32 may also be changed to provide a diierent opening 33.
We claim:
l. An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members, said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, said jaws being notched to receive the wire while cutting the insulation thereabout, a wire positioning means having a portion located on the side of the jaws away from the pivot means and provided with a guide substantially in line with the cutting jaws when the latter are in closed position .to direct the wire into The side the jaws toward the pivot means, and means to pivotally mount said positioning means on said pivotal means said jaws being movable relative to said positioning means.
2. An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members, said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, said jaws being notched to receive the wire while cutting the insulation thereabout, a wire positioning means having a portion located on the side of the jaws away from the pivot means and provided with a guide substantially in line with the cutting jaws when the latter are in closed position to direct the work into the jaws toward the pivot means, means to pivotally mount said positioning means on said pivotal means, and resilient means acting between each of said jaws and said positioning means for centering said positioning means relative to said jaws.
3. An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members, said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, and a stop carried by one of the jaws in line with and behind the jaws when the latter are in closed position against which the work may abut and having an opening therethrough of a size to pass the wire but engage the insulation.

An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members, said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, and a U-shaped stop carried by one of the jaws in line with and behind the jaws when the latter are in closed position against which the work may abut forming a pair of arms with an opening between its arm of a size to pass the wire but engage the insulation.

An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, said jaws being notched to receive the wire while cutting the insulation thereabout, a wire positioning means comprising a rectangular frame surrounding the jaws and movably supported by said pivoting means and having a portion located on the side of the jaws away from the pivot means and provided with a guide substantially in line with the cutting jaws when the latter are in closed position to direct the wire into the jaws towards the pivot means.

An insulating wire stripping device comprising a pair of members, means to pivotally relate said members providing handle portions at one of their ends and cutting jaws at their other ends, said jaws being notched t0 receive the wire while cutting the insulation thereabout, a wire positioning means comprising a rectangular frame surrounding the jaws and movably supported by said pivoting means and having a portion located on the side of the jaws away from the pivot means and provided with a guide substantially in line with the cutting jaws when the latter are in closed position to direct the wire into the jaws towards the pivot means, and springs acting between the jaws and the frame to f symmetrically position the guide with reference to the jaws.
