' To all whom it may concern lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for capping off glass cyllnders, the object being to provide a simple and effective hand tool by which glass cylinders can be accurately and quickly severed or capped off, and it consists in a handle made in two sections each section of which 1s secured to an end of the heating wire, and means for connecting the two sections of the handle.
My invention further consists in a handle made in two detachable sections, means for connecting an end of the heating wire to each section and means carried by one section for taking up the slack in'the wire.
It further consists in a handle composed of two sections, a heating wire connected with each section and means for conducting an electric current to said wire.
It further consists in the details of construction as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my improvement; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the two sections of the handle separated and Fig. 3 is an edge view.
The handle is preferably rectangular in shape, and is divided longitudinally into two sections as shown in Fig. 2. One section isprovided at one edge wlth tenons 3,

lutely prevent any independent movement of either section of the handle. One section also carries the spring latch 7, which engages the keeper 8 in the other section for locking the two sections together, the construction of the latch and keeper being such, that, the two parts may be readily connected by simply bringing them into proper position and pushing them together, and may be readily separated by a pulling stress applied to the sections. 1
The handle sections are made of indurated fiber or other suitable non-conducting material, and thesection 1 is preferably made hollow so as to contain and conceal the leading-in wires 9 and 10. -The wire 9' is connected with the switch block 11,'and the other wire 10 is electrically connected with the shank of the latch 7. A wire or other suitable conductor 12 connects the other member 13 of the switch with a metal terminal block 14 at the front end section 1 of the handle 14. This block 14: is grooved at its outer end for the passage of the heating wire 15,-one end of which is attached to the screw 16 secured to terminal block 14. This heating wire passes under the lug l7 integral with or secured to the terminal block 18, which is secured to'the front end of the section 2 of the handle, and the free end of said wire is connected to the reel 19 on which surplus wire is wound. The block 18 is grooved to; permit the wire to pass in an approximatelystraight line to thereel 19, and the latter is mounted on the arm 20 pivoted at 21 to section 2 of the handle. The keeper '8 is integral with or electrically connected to I the terminal-block 18, so that when the two sections of the handle are connected, and the switch lever 22 is in contact with the switch member 11 the current for heating the wire 15 will pass from the block 14130 the wire 15; from the latter to the block 18 andfrom then through the latch? back to the leading in wire 10. The blocks 14: and 18 areinsulated from each other, and the construction by simply bringing their mating edgesinto contact. The cylinders vary but slightly in diameter so that the free wire between the r the switch lever is moved to close the circuit, 1
and the current passing through the wirerapidly heats it,'-an d the heat being com-- -municated to thecylinder causes'the latter to break or fracture on the heated line. The heatin'gof the wire causes it to expand,
terminal blocks 14 and 18, is usually sufficientto embrace the cylinder, and any va-j riations in size can be taken careoi by letting out wire from the reel or winding up the surplus. After the two sections of the handle wire surrounding the cylinder is drawn tightly into contact with the latter, by the operator pulling back on the arms 20 carrying the reel 19, which he may conveniently do with one finger of the hand carrying the handle. After the wire has been'properly applied to the cylinder,
but this expansion is taken'care of by the reel which is heldunder rearward pull by the operatorduring the capping operation. In order to heat the small portion of the cylinder between the wires at the points where the latter turn into the grooves in the terminal blocks, the operator may shift the handle up or down and thusbring the hot wire intocontact with theentire circumference.
