Abstract

557,208. Reciprocating pumps. LE CLAIR, C. C. S., and TECALEMIT, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1942, No. 2003. [Class 102 (i)] In a reciprocating pump, suitable for pumping de-icing liquid on aircraft, movement of the piston is automatically arrested if the delivery pressure exceeds a pre-determined value, whilst the piston-operating mechanism continues to operate. There may be a single piston, or a number of separate units, each containing one or more pistons, may be joined together for a single or multiple delivery. In the form shown, a cylinder 3 has inlet ports 4 communicating with the interior of a cylindrical casing 1 serving as a reservoir, a non-return outlet ball valve 8, and a hollow rubber air ball 39 to secure a regular delivery. The piston 2 has a collar 10 which is forced by a spring 11 into contact with a roller 13 carried by the free end of a two-plate rocking lever 14, the extremity of which engages an arcuate guide 30. The other end of the lever 14 is pivoted to a plunger 15, the ends of which operate in hollow bosses 1A, 19 in the casing 1, a shoulder 20 on the plunger being forced by a spring 23 into engagement with a piston-stroke adjusting nut 26. The two springs 11, 23 hold a roller 31, carried at the middle of the lever 14, in contact with a cam 32 on an operating shaft 33. If the delivery pressure becomes excessive the movement of the piston 2 is arrested and the cam 32 rocks the lever 14 about the pivot 13A.
