[Class 94 (i)] A method of forming a package of substantially rectangular form consists in moving a wrapper through a guide channel by means of the article to be wrapped to form an openended pouch, folding and sealing the side flaps of the wrapper as it is moved, completing the folding of the open end, and finally transferring the packet on to a preformed blank on a conveyer arranged transversely to the guide channel. The method is intended particularly for packing batches of cigarettes in transparent cellulosic material of the kind which is rendered adhesive by heat, the sealing of the overlapping edges of the wrapper being effected by contact with heated tools. Cigarettes are fed longitudinally from a hopper 11 in a succession of batches 12 each of which is moved forward along a guide channel 17 by a pusher 18 attached to conveyer chains 19. Before entering the channel 17, the batch encounters a strip 21 of cellulosic material, and this strip is carried into the channel 17 and in so doing is folded around one end and the front and back of the batch. The side edges of the wrapper are folded by fixed folders 23, and the overlapping side edges of the folded wrapper are sealed to one another as they pass heated sealing- elements 24 which are pressed resiliently against the side of the batch. The batch, now enclosed in a pouch with one end open, comes to rest at an end-folding station where the pusher bar moves away in the manner described in Specification 4,19,619. [Group XXX]. The open end of the pouch is new folded by side tuckers and end folders 27, 28, as described in Specification 489,935. The packet is next transferred by the folding member 28 into one of a series of open-ended packets 36 carried by a chain conveyer 37, each packet containing a preformed blank 38 which later is formed into the slide of a slide-and-shell carton. The folded end of the wrapper is then pressed and sealed by a heated sealing-member 39 as the packet is conveyed to the mechanism for completing the slide and shell carton.
