Abstract

1,134,500. Packaging machines. H. H. FOCKE, L. UHINK, and H. PFUHL, [trading as FOCKE & PFUHL]. 29 April, 1966 [20 May, 1965; 1 Feb., 1966], No. 19000/66. Heading B8C. Block-like articles, e.g. cigarette packets, are fed by dogs 11 on a chain 10 past a station 13 where a wrapper blank 14a is severed, by a roller 43, from a reel, and fed by rollers 42 and a suction device 15 across the path of an article so as to be entrained in U-shape about the article; end tucks 17 of the blank are then folded against the article end walls by stationary fingers 16, and the article passed to a first folding wheel B, which includes pockets 21, having spring-loaded, cam-operated folding members 25, which fold the top trailing flap of the blank on to the article back face, and pass the article to a second folding wheel C which includes pockets 40, each having a folding edge 39 which folds the bottom trailing flap 26 of the blank against the article and the edge 18, and spot seals it by means of heated members 41. The wheel C is mounted on a shaft 36 which also carries a member 46 revolving faster than the wheel C and carrying folding shoes 72. The shoes tuck in rear end tucks 44 and fold down the lower end flaps 47 away from the packet. The member 46 may alternatively be reciprocated. Pairs of ploughs 51, 55 then fold the upper end flaps 54 down, and the lower end flaps 47 up, against the article end walls. The wrapped article is then passed between heated endless bands 58 to seal the wrapper on the article end walls, and then past a single heated endless band (69), Fig. 2, to seal the trailing flaps 18, 26. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 6-8, the folding wheels are mounted one above the other, and the heating bands replaced by two heating wheels (100), (101), positioned one above the other. The wheel (100) includes pockets which receive the wrapped article, and on each of which is mounted a pair of opposed cam-operated sealing jaws (120), (121) which seal the end flaps of the package. The jaws open if the machine is stopped. The wheel (101) includes package receiving pockets (103), in which a cam-operated heated plate 131 seals the trailing flaps (18), (26).
