Abstract

554,769. Bearings. JOY, R. E., and RAY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 31, 1942, No. 4277. [Class 12 (i)] A self-centering conical ball or roller bearing has a coned outer race 15b engaged by a tapered split sleeve 16 engaged by a bush 17 screwed into the casing 50 and rotated by a spring 22 connected between pins 53, 55 in the bush and casing. A spring washer 30 provides a counter-force to prevent the bearing being overloaded or jamming. A fixed bearing 40 may be provided at the other end of the spindle 11 to take up external axial thrust. Pin 53 may project through a slot in the casing and be connected by an external spring to a pin 55 on the outside of the casing. The split sleeve 16 may be integral with the bush 17. The casing has a sump for oil preferably kept at the level 52 to cover a bi-metallic strip 56 secured between the casing and the bush 17 to maintain a temperature correction.
