[Class 32] [Also in Group XII] A fractionating tower of the bubble tray type, constructed of non- metallic materials, e.g. earthenware, ferrosilicon, for the treatment of corrosive liquids, e.g. sulphuric acid, is provided with a relatively deep tray for receiving the incoming liquid and preheating it directly by the vapours, a number of subjacent trays, and an overflow pipe for passing liquid from the preheating tray to a lower tray without coming into contact with vapours passing through intermediary trays. The tower comprises a series of trays 1 detachably superimposed and contained in an outer casing 2. The liquid is fed through a pipe 10 on to a seal pot 9 from which it flows in films over a conical member 8 on to the deep heat exchange tray 7. From this the liquid overflows through centrally arranged pipes 15, 18 into a seal pot 24 on a tray 91 thus bypassing the upper bubble tray 81. Each tray comprises a number of necked openings 16 provided with triangular bubble caps 19 and a central socket 17 supporting the overflow pipe 18. The upper edges of the seal pots have serrated edges to direct flow of liquid. The lowermost tray rests on a ring 28 which in turn rests on a base member 29 supported on the vapour outlet 30 of the still by a distance ring 32. The base ring inner spherical part 36 supports a funnel member 39 carrying a seal pot 40.
