Abstract
1,035,337. Plate heat exchangers. O. MONTZ. March 8, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 9317/63. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for exchanging heat between a downflowing liquid and an ascending gas or vapour comprises a plurality of vertically spaced horizontal trays mounted in a shell, each tray having a plurality of peripheral blades which bear against the inside of the shell. As shown in Fig. 2 each tray comprises a horizontal plate 4 having a peripheral vertical flange 15 in the upper part of which are formed curved blades 17. The latter are made of steel and bear resiliently against the inside of the shell 1. Pipes 2 and 3 are provided for the downward passage from tray to tray of a liquid, the pipes being secured to the top and bottom of a box 10 at the centre of the tray. The box is divided by a sloping partition 14 which directs the incoming liquid into the tray through a lower aperture in one side of the box 10, an upper aperture being provided in the other side 19 of the box so that the side 19 acts as a weir determining the liquid level in the tray. The ascending gas is admitted to the tray to bubble through the liquid therein through tubes 6 surmounted by caps 7 having serrated lower edges and through apertures at the sides of box 10 (Fig. 3, not shown). The gases also pass through the slits formed between the blades 17, these slits being sufficiently narrow to prevent or hinder the passage of liquid therethrough. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 an apron 151 is secured to the flange 15a of the tray and is formed with upper and lower sets of blades 171 which are bent over into contact with the shell 1, a sealing compound 20 being interposed between the apron and shell. The lower set of blades and the sealing compound 20 may alternatively be omitted. In further embodiments a continuous central downcomer tube may be used, the shell 1 may be of glass, several such shells may be assembled in a common housing having inlet and outlet connections and a distributer plate for the liquid, and the box 10 may be replaced by upper and lower superimposed boxes each having a single inlet or outlet aperture (Figs. 8 to 12, not shown).
