554,155. Carbon. MORLEY. R. H. H. Aug. 1, 1941, No. 1306/43. Divided out of 554,123. [Class 90] Active carbon is purified by treatment with a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, e.g. water gas, whereby oxides of carbonylforming metals are first reduced and then converted into carbonyls and volatilised. The reduction stage is effected at 300 ‹C. or more and at atmospheric or higher pressure, and the second stage at 30-300‹C. and at a pressure of 1 to 400 atmospheres.
