547,909. Iron, manufacture of. DUFFIELD, F. L. Jan. 15, 1941, No. 575. [Class 72] In the production of iron from ore in a single shaft furnace, the upper part c of the furnace is charged with layers of coke a alternating with layers of ore b and the lower part d with coke. The ore in the zone c is heated to a temperature higher than its point of fusion in the oxidising zone j of the furnace by the introduction of air through the tuyers e and the melted ore is reduced to iron in the zone d by direct contact with incandescent carbon heated by air introduced through tuyers f or by the application of electric current, e.g. by electrodes.
