Abstract

526,799. Electric melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25250. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] In a glass melting furnace the raw material is introduced through openings 3 close to which, in each portion 1, 1a, are electrodes 5, 5a extending across the path of the flowing material and each producing a hot zone 6 which is short longitudinally of the furnace. The raw material is rapidly melted by the concentrated heat, and is fired in the portion 2, in which there are no electrodes, on the way to outlets 4. In a modification, three melting portions are provided each with an electrode connected to a threephase supply..
