Abstract

547,902. Spray carburetters. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 15, 1941, No. 3581.. Convention date, April 24, 1940. [Class 7 (iii)] In a device for adding a second fuel or other ingredient to the fuel flowing to the nozzle during the higher power range of the engine, for preventing detonation or icing, the normal fuel supplied at 66 is controlled by a valve 34 on its way to the nozzle 22 by passages 52, 50, the valve being actuated by a diaphragm 48 responsive to the flow of fuel and another diaphragm 46 responsive to the flow of air in the intake 10, while the additional fuel or ingredient supplied at 114 is controlled by a valve 108 on its way to a passage 118 also leading to the nozzle, the valve 108 being actuated by a diaphragm 98. The diaphragm 46 is connected at opposite sides by passages 36, 42 to a Venturi 14 and the air intake respectively, while a restriction 54 causes a differential pressure on the diaphragm 48 according to the flow of fuel, this being transmitted to the diaphragm 98 by passages 72, and 50, 118. Balancing diaphragms 60, 62, 64 and 102 are provided as shown. At small throttle openings the restriction 54 is controlled by a valve 74 connected to the throttle 16. The valve 108 may also be manually actuated by means of a cam 125. The mixture may be enriched at higher powers by a valve 92 actuated by a lever 90 connected to diaphragms 82, 84, 86 communicating as shown with the spaces at opposite sides of the diaphragm 46, so that when the pressure difference thereon exceeds a certain amount the valve 92 opens to admit fuel from below the diaphragm 48 to the space above it, and thereby to the passage 50. The additional fuel or ingredient may be a mixture of aniline and alcohol, with or without tetraethyl lead.
