543,846. Indole derivatives. BURGOINE, E., STOCKS, H. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 13, 1940, No. 14164. [Class 2 (iii)] 2-Alkyl or phenyl-indoles are prepared by heating the sodium or potassium derivative of ortho-C 6 H 4 (CH 3 )NHOOR, in which R represents alkyl or phenyl, with barium oxide in the presence of a tertiary aromatic amine such as dimethyl- or diethyl-aniline or diethyl-mtoluidine. Advantageously the sodium or potassium derivative is prepared in the presence of the tertiary aromatic amine and the re-action product heated with barium oxide. Examples describe the preparation of 2-methylindole from acetyl-o-toluidine, 2-ethylindole from propionyl-o-toluidine, 2-phenylindole from benzoyl-o-toluidine and 2:5-dimethylindole from 2:4-dimethylacetanilide. Specifications 303,467 and 330,332, [both in Class 2 (iii)], are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the methyl group may be replaced by alkyl and an alkyl group may be attached to the nitrogen atom.
