Abstract

542,745. Electromagnetic relays. CREED & CO., Ltd. (Western Union Telegraph Co.). Nov. 22. 1940, No. 16801. [Class 38 (v)] In a telegraphic relay in which an armature 12 carrying a contact 13 moves between permanent magnet poles 8, 9 and fixed contacts 27, 28 and is operated one way or other by current of suitable direction in operating coils 33, 34 surrounding the armature, the permanent magnet is movable as a whole for adjustment purposes about a pivot 10 and the contacts 27, 28 are also adjustable. In the form shown, the armature 12 is also pivoted at 10, and its lower end moves between additional pole pieces 8<SP>1</SP>, 9' which with the pieces 8, 9 project from laminated cores, which support by attraction the permanent magnet 11. The adjustment of the permanent magnet structure is effected by a screw 23 which moves a lever 17 carrying a pin 20 which engages a slot 21 on the structure. The contacts 27, 28 are mounted on spring strips which rest against adjustable screws 30. Bounce is thus eliminated. In a modification, the armature is pivoted at its lower end instead of centrally.
