Contact - making relays; electromagnetic switches.-Flat-type relays have the armature in the form of a closed frame embracing the energizing coil and adapted to co-operate with polepieces at the end of a straight core. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the core 3, of oval cross-section, carrying the coil 26 has flattened polar extensions 4, 5, the extension 4 terminating in a fixed plate 2. The armature 10 has limbs 35, 36 joined by yoke members 13, 14 adapted to co-operate with the fixed polar extensions 4, 5 and is held on arms 19, 20 of a plate spring 18 secured to the plate 2. The armature is provided with pins 30 for operating sets of spring contacts 28, 29, and its outward movement is limited by an adjustable nut 33 on a stud 32. To prevent leakage, the yoke members are bent as shown in Fig. 4, so that the main portion of the armature occupies the same plane as the core and the back of the pole piece 5 may be cut away as at 39. The core may be provided with a short-circuited winding or copper sleeve for retarding the movement of the armature which may itself be formed of permalloy for this purpose.
