Abstract

542,609. Amines. PRATT, H. R. C., MORRIS, G. O., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 18, 1940, No. 11845. [Class 2 (iii)] Mixtures rich in secondary and/or tertiary amines are obtained by the action of hydrogen, at an elevated temperature and in presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, on a mixture containing a nitrile and a straight or branched chain aliphatic alcohol and/or such an aldehyde and/or such a ketone. The catalyst is suitably an element of the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th or 8th groups of the periodic system, e.g. finely divided copper, iron, cobalt or nickel, or a compound containing such an element, and is advantageously associated with a substance having a dehydrating and/or promoting action, e.g. a difficultly reducible oxide, such as thoria, silica, alumina or an oxide of chromium or cerium. The re-action may be performed in presence of an inert gaseous diluent, e.g. nitrogen. In examples, (1) a mixture of 40 parts of acetonitrile and 60 parts of acetaldehyde is passed with excess of hydrogen over -a nickel catalyst on pumice at 200-230‹ C. ; the product, recovered partly by cooling and partly by absorption in dilute mineral acid, is distilled with excess of caustic soda and the .distillate is dried over solid caustic soda and fractionated ; (2) the catalyst in (1) is replaced by a nickel-alumina catalyst on pumice ; (3) the proportions of acetonitrile and acetaldehyde in (2) are varied and a table is given showing the composition of the products ; (4) a mixture of 18.7 parts of n-butyronitrile and 31.3 parts of n-butyraldehyde is passed with excess of hydrogen over a catalyst as. in (3) at 220-240‹ C. and the products similarly recovered ; (5) a mixture of 45 parts of acetonitrile and 105 parts of acetone is passed with excess of hydrogen over a catalyst as in (3) at 215-225‹ C. and the products similar recovered ; (6) and (7) the catalyst in (1) is replaced by copper-nickel-alumina on pumice and the reaction performed in glass and steel apparatus respectively.
